Winter forecasts in the North were strong, but short-lived. It should be milder again at the start of the new week.

On Monday night, snowfall travels across the country in the southern half of Lower Saxony, and it could reach five centimeters. The snow will gradually turn into rain. There is a danger of icing there. The temperature inside could drop to minus five degrees, said Michael Baudetz, a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD). A very thin layer of snow can remain locally, especially near the Baltic Sea coast. Through Monday, it will remain damp and cool during the day. According to DWD, the “Winter Episode” ends Tuesday night at the latest.

At first the snowfall wasn’t very productive – except in the northeast

Most of the first snowfall on Friday and Saturday was not particularly heavy in northern Germany. Police called on drivers to switch from summer tires to winter tires now at the latest.

“As far as we can see in the future, at the end of next week the temperature level will drop to about ten degrees in the greater Hamburg area,” said Josef Kantuser, a meteorologist at DWD. Rain is expected again and again over the next week, but that won’t make up for the many dry spells this year, according to the meteorologist.

Many slippery accidents on the roads of northern Germany

Several slippery accidents were reported from the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on Saturday. In the area of ​​\u200b\u200bthe police headquarters in Neubrandenburg alone – that is, in the eastern part of the country – the police had to register twelve ice accidents by noon, and the focus was on the area around Passo Walk. Several vehicles have thrown themselves into the crash barriers on the A19, A20 and A24 motorways. Most of the accidents were minor.

The ice had already led to several accidents in the Osnabruck area on Friday evening – including on the A33 motorway. Three cars collided there. Four people were injured, two of whom were taken to hospital.
