Run-off elections should determine who will be the new mayor of Rostock. After the first round of voting, Eva Maria Krueger (left) and Michael Ebert (supported by CDU/FDP/UFR) were in the top neck with the most votes.

The election of a new mayor in Rostock will not be decided until November 27. In the first ballot, Eva Maria Krueger (Day Link) and Michael Ebert (Independent, supported by CDU, FDP, UFR) received the largest number of votes, but neither obtained an absolute majority. They will face each other in the run-off in two weeks. Member of Parliament Krueger was just ahead, and according to the city administration, after counting all the constituencies, he had a voting share of 25.3 percent, and Ebert came to 23.6 percent. Ebert is the state’s chief of riot police and was the chief of police in Rostock.

Five women and 12 men ran for election

Carmen-Alina Pozzato (SPD) received 16.5 percent of the vote, Claudia Müller (Bündnis90/Die Grünen) 8.6 percent, Michael Meister (AfD) 6.5 percent, and Jörg Kepelos (individual applicant) 5.1 percent. All other candidates received less than five percent of the vote. Five women and 12 men applied for the position.

Krueger and Ebert were satisfied with their findings

Eva Maria Krueger said she was very pleased with the result. “We’ve also worked hard for this,” the left-wing politician told NDR 1 Radio MV. “Now it’s time for the second round with a clear goal: Rostock will remain Rostock. That’s my wish.” If she wins the November 27 elections, she first wants to come to terms with the citizens, because she knows they want a more intense relationship with the mayor “in order to finally implement important decisions.” Michael Ebert acknowledged “the confidence that the people of Rostock have shown me in the outcome of this election”. It’s an incentive to “invest more energy in the next 14 days.” If he is elected mayor, it is important for him to “establish the administration in such a way that it can take over and move the interests of the people, but also the economy and the community of the city in a sustainable way”.

The Social Democrats regretted that Carmen-Alina Pozzato “despite her highly committed campaign”, missed the run-off. “Our hats off to the personal commitment of Carmen and her family to the election campaign,” read a Facebook message.

Former Mayor Madsen left prematurely

The mayor is elected for a term of seven years. But this time, residents were called to the polls early. Early elections became necessary because Mayor Klaus Roh Madsen (independent) moved to Schleswig-Holstein in June after only three years in office and became Minister of the Economy there.

About 172,000 Rostock residents aged 16 and over were able to vote. Voter turnout was 43.7 percent. According to the Elections Administration, more than 99 percent of the votes cast were valid.
