As with any approach to designing small spaces, the trick is to be as creative as possible. “Remember to use all the space, nooks and crannies in the room,” says Anne Marie Cousins, founder of AMC Design. “In the short period, there are often gaps on either side of the chimney chamber which make the shelves or cupboards large and open.”

Another tip for organizing a small apartment is to build cabinets all the way to the ceiling to make the most of the dead space.
Erin advises: “If you’re blessed with high ceilings, don’t forget that you’ll need a way to reach the upper shelves.” As with any apartment closet, which can often be at odd angles, access to it is key.
“Think of an airy library ladder that serves a practical purpose and adds decorative detail to your sketch.” Erin says. “If that doesn’t fit in the space, you have stylish stairs on hand.”

He continues, “To maximize storage space in this location (above), we sat to the ceiling. Of particular note is the small bedroom, where the wardrobe door is covered in the same wallpaper that Philip Jeffries used on the walls.
“It created a cohesive impression with very few sources of eye distraction – a clever way to increase the sense of space.”
3. Work with window and storage seats

Built-in storage doesn’t always mean cabinets alone – window seat ideas are great for combining functionality and aesthetics.

4. Build in banquet chairs

Banquet stools can also work well anywhere, especially for small kitchen dinner ideas. The kitchen-dining room of a 1950s Chelsea townhouse isn’t very spacious, so design studio Gunter & Co chose space-saving banquet chairs to maximize every part of the room.
“It’s a very effective way to compress more places into a small space,” says Erin Gunther.. To maximize space, build a storage box at the base of the banquette – you can easily access it by lifting the seat.
5. Invest in a storage bed

Usually, the bed will occupy the most space in the bedroom of your small apartment.
Choosing a model with integrated storage makes sense, especially when storing bulky items such as bedding, blankets, and towels.
“A loft bed with drawers built into the base is one solution,” says Erin. The footstool with a mechanism lifts the mattress and reveals plenty of storage space is something else.
6. Choose shallow or hidden cabinets in the bathroom

When it comes to small bathroom furniture, it’s important to strike a balance between being useful and not overloading the space.
This is especially true of the sink, where the partition cabinet may seem intrusive.
“Shallow mirrored cabinets are widely available, and it’s amazing how much they can be stored under 6 inches deep,” Erin says. This will include, for example, medicines and cosmetics that you want to keep out of children’s reach.
He adds, “Another option for shallow bathroom cabinets is to incorporate them. This is artfully illustrated in this bathroom where a column wall allowed us to leave a pair of custom-made mirror cabinets.”
At first glance, the cabinets look like mirrors, but a second look shows that they have adequate storage space.
Versatile furniture and accessories that do twice the effort in more than one job are a good idea for home storage.
7. Replace your traditional kitchen island with an island on wheels

There are many kitchen design ideas in the apartment that can provide a sense of space and add practicality.
“If your kitchen is small, why not replace the traditional kitchen island with a freestanding unit, perhaps on wheels?” Erin suggests.
This way you can wrap it in a corner so that the kitchen is free from heat. Another advantage of furniture with wheels (or legs) is that it creates a more noticeable floor surface, which in turn gives the illusion of more space.
8. Choose wall lights or pendant lights in the bedroom to save surface space

A short bedroom per square meter? Bedside tables can also be compact.
To avoid crowding the light bulbs, why not opt for pendant lights instead?
Erin Gunther’s advice: “Once you’ve decided exactly where to put your bed, you’ll know where to install the pendants.
Think about how much clearance you want between the bottom of the lamp and the top of the bedside table. To make room for a stack of books or a jug of water, I always recommend at least 12 inches around.

Choosing benches that can be used as benches as well as for storage is a welcome apartment storage idea that can help you clean up the clutter.
Place the chaise longue at the end of the bed or place it in the hall or living room for extra seating as well as storage.
“Choose dual-purpose furniture like the coffee table, which also has storage underneath for items like board games or electrical items like chargers and remote controls,” says Anne Marie Cousins of AMC Designs.
10. Use open shelves for storage as well as for display

Open shelves are almost a staple in a small apartment and serve as a perfect place to display your goals and short posters, but they’re also a perfect place to store books and other essentials.
