How to use the water potential of Gdansk? Rivers, streams and the intersection of the city with the Gulf of Gdansk are the areas analyzed by the development office Gdansk. The prepared document contains instructions for changes both for city units and for residents who submit proposals to the civil budget.

The just-published study “Gdańska Polityka Wodna” by Biuro Rozwoju Gdańska is a continuation of work begun a few years ago.

In 2014, the Gdansk City Council adopted the 2030 Plus Gdansk Development Strategy, which includes, among other things, the Public Space Operational Program. In the following years, consultations were held on clarifying individual programmes.

In 2018, the first part of the Gdansk Water Policy Document was published. Now this document has been enriched with detailed desirable development guidelines (called “policies”) for the four waterside regions.

The method of development depends on the neighborhood

The type of area determines the possibilities of using the sidewalk. For example, in a residential area, it is necessary to strive to make the space as in contact with the water as possible for pedestrians, while in the sphere of economic activity (ports, shipyards, refineries), the priority of production and industrial activities significantly reduce public accessibility.

In addition, the required form for the development of sidewalks, coasts and beaches was determined:

  • urban (close to dense development and service location, including the Motawa waterfront and Radunia canal in Śródmieście, Martwa Wisła in Young town and at Nowy port, and beaches in Brzeźno and Jelitkowo),
  • recreational (mainly residential areas, including Potok Orunsky in the south, Potok Jasice in a non-forested area, Potok Oliwski near Żabianka, Martwa Wisła in Przeróbka and Stogi),
  • Nature and recreation (in the forest zone and agricultural areas, including the forest sections of the Oliwski and Strzyża streams, the Motława River in the southern part of the Olszynka and the Radunia River).

The development method depends on the type of pavement

In the urban area, thinking about the use of place potential in the context of links between existing and new buildings is dominant, while in other areas, priority is given to Investments in green spaces arranged as space emptiness For nearby residents or – in the case of the latter category – reduced interference with nature and landscape.

For each section of the berths, the Gdansk Development Office has prepared proposals for equipment elements and the required direction for space development. The most important hiking and cycling links with the surrounding areas are also noted.

In the article, we present parts of the study for selected sites. The full text of the study is available On the website of the Gdansk Development Office.

Thinking about municipal institutions and the civil budget

To whom is the study of Gdansk Waterspace directed?

It will be used by municipal entities and private investors when planning and implementing new projects in Gdansk. The study also provides guidance for local development plans and may be useful to residents and local associations when submitting projects to Civic Budget and Green Civic Budget – says Katarzyna Błaszkowska From the BRG social media team.

Blue cards for green water areas

The next stage of work on water policy in Gdansk will be carried out next year and will include the creation of a base for green areas on the banks of the river and the development of “blue cards”, which contain detailed instructions for their development.
