German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that there will definitely be more talks with the US government about the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The United States recently announced that it will not impose sanctions on the company overseeing the construction of the pipeline linking Russia and Germany.
– There will definitely be more discussions and talks with the Americans about Nord Stream 2, Merkel said during Tuesday’s summit of European Union leaders in Brussels.
On May 20, the US State Department announced in a report to Congress that it would not impose sanctions on the company overseeing construction of the NS2 – Nord Stream AG and its president, Matthias Warnig. It was driven by causes of national interest. The decision drew criticism from US lawmakers.
And it was announced Saturday, that many ships and companies involved in the construction and the Russian Maritime Rescue Service are subject to sanctions by the US Treasury.
The two-pipe pipeline is now nearly complete. The construction is opposed, among other things, by Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic states that the completion of the project will increase Europe’s dependence on gas imports from Russia and expand the Kremlin’s political influence.
