THIS summer football fans can step back in time to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history when second division Sunderland triumphed over Leeds United to win the FA Cup.
On Saturday 15th June, fans can re-live the magic of Monty’s famous double-save and Porterfield’s finest moment on a giant outdoor screen at Herrington Country Park as part of Sunderland Festival (14-16th June).
Organised by Sunderland Live, teh festival will include an outdoor family movie on Friday evening (14th), the FA Cup celebrations on Saturday (15th) and a giant birthday party to commemorate Sunderland’s 21 years of city status on Sunday (16th).
Similar to the hugely popular and successful open air festival to celebrate the Olympic torch relay in Sunderland in 2012, Herrington Country Park is expected to welcome thousands of families from Wearside and beyond across the weekend to enjoy an array of activities and entertainment from fairground rides and attractions, big screen action, arts and craft marquees to sports and outdoor games as well as a food village and beer tent.
The highlight of Saturday afternoon, the first ever outdoor screening of the full 1973 FA Cup Final on a giant screen will kick off at 3.00pm and expect to hear big cheers at 3.30pm and 4.25pm! After the match the entertainment continues with live music and sounds of the 70’s on stage until 8pm.
Chris Alexander, Chief Operating Officer of Sunderland Live, said: “Sunderland Festival will be a major free event on Sunderland Live’s calendar and we’ve developed a premium package for those that want to upgrade their matchday experience. Additional income such as this will help us to invest even more in events for Sunderland.
“The Big Screen Premium Pass will be available for just £10 for adults and £5 for children (aged under14). The upgrade includes deck chair seating in a private enclosed area with premium views of the big screen, access to private bar facilities, priority parking and the opportunity to pre-order a picnic to be collected on site.
“The 1973 FA Cup Final is a huge part of Sunderland’s history. Everyone in the city knows the date 5th May 1973 and we’re sure thousands of people, some that were there, some of the 500,000 that welcomed the team back and some that weren’t even a twinkle in anyone’s eye at the time, will enjoy stepping back in time to relive the tension and excitement of such a thrilling game on a giant outdoor screen in the park.
Chris added: “Although the match kicks off at 3.00pm, access to the premium area will be available from 1.00pm right until the festival ends at 8.00pm to ensure guests have a first class experience and can enjoy all the other elements of the festival.”
There are a limited number of the premium passes available at £10 for adults and just £5 per child. To book a premium pass please visit www.sunderlandlive.co.uk or contact Sunderland Live for further information on 0191 561 8412 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
