On Thursday, Los Angeles police accidentally shot a 14-year-old girl, killing her during a shootout with an assailant who had attacked a woman, authorities said Thursday. The attacker was killed and the seriously injured woman was taken to hospital.
This dramatic event took place at the Burlington Coat Factory clothing store in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Witnesses called the police with firearms. The officers opened fire when the attacker began shooting at another person as well.
The man died as a result of the shootout.
However, as Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Deputy Chief Dominic Choi reports, one of the bullets fired by police officers broke through the fitting room door and hit the 14-year-old girl who was inside.
Choi added that the motives of the attacker had not yet been determined, nor whether he knew the woman who started the shooting at the store.
