The

ondon faces a worsening Covid-19 crisis with nearly 32,000 new cases recorded in a week, shocking numbers revealed today.

They have shown an alarming infection rate in northeast London and surrounding neighborhoods, with other areas across the city being severely affected.

  • A daily record of 6,777 new confirmed cases was announced on Wednesday and 31,882 cases in the week ending December 13th. The true figure is estimated to be several times higher, with one in three people suffering from the disease without symptoms.
  • The rate of new cases in London rose for seven days to 298.8 per 100,000 people in the week ending December 11, and to 596 in Hovering.
  • Seven boroughs have a seven-day average over 400, and the other six are Barking and Dagenham (512), Redbridge (480.3), Waltham Forest (431.1), Enfield (430.2), Newham and Bexley (both 406.4).
  • Ten neighborhoods contracted more than 1,000 new cases in the week ending 11 December; Havering (1547), Redbridge (1466), Enfield (1436), Newham (1435), Tower Hamlets (1211), Waltham Forest (1194) Barking and Dagenham (1090), Bromley (1064), Croydon (1056) and Bexley ( 1009)
  • Richmond is seeing a weekly increase in cases of 115.2%, Hammersmith and Fulham 93.5%, Lewisham 93.2%, Southwark 91.9% and Enfield 91.5%
  • Twenty-four regions are experiencing a weekly increase of more than 50 percent
  • Hospital admissions for Covid patients continue to rise, with 1,706 per week until December 13th, with 287 in the thirteenth
  • The number of Covid patients using ventilators in London hospitals rose to 291 on December 16th

“Cases are increasing in those at risk over the 1960s, and while there is a mixed picture of case numbers in various neighborhoods, we are now seeing sustained growth in nearly all of them, as well as in neighboring parts of Essex and Kent.”

“With the deployment of the vaccine already underway in London and across the country, we can now see a light at the end of the tunnel. But we still have work to do to keep us and our loved ones safe over Christmas and the New Year.”

He added, “The actions of each of us today will have a direct impact on the direction London is heading. That is why we must all unite together as one city to put pressure on the curve, reduce the rate of transition and make sure that there is no crisis in our hospitals in the coming weeks.

“To support these efforts, we are increasing the availability of testing across the city and are already running asymptomatic mass testing in 15 locations.”
