KUL Guest Study Center – Signing of a letter of intent with the participation of Minister Przemysław Czarnek

The KUL Guest Study Center is a new educational initiative of John Paul II Catholic University in Lublin. The Minister of Education and Science participated in the signing ceremony of the letter of intent to inaugurate the operation of the facility.

The Study Center of the Catholic University of Lublin for prisoners, as one of the first institutions of this kind, will enable inmates to receive higher education. The educational offer will be available not only to detainees in the remand center in Lublin.

– Among the inmates wishing to study and graduates, the vast majority are people who are subsequently rehabilitated after their release and do not return to the previous crimes that caused their problems – the MEiN chief noted.

The Minister of Education and Science announced that two ministries will fund the Study Center of the Catholic University of Lublin for the inmates. The money will be donated by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Education and Science. – The Ministry of Justice will finance the launch of the center, and the Ministry of Education and Science will support its operation in the form of an increase in subsidies by about two million zlotys, said the head of MEiN.

The founder of the new center is the Rector of the Catholic University of Lublin Sr. the professor. Miroslav Kalinovsky, who today signed a letter of intent with the Director General of the Prison Service, General Jacek Kitlinowski. The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Minister of Justice Mikhail Wu and Marcin Romanovsky.

Teaching prisoners at the Catholic University of Lublin

For the first time, the Rehabilitation through Science project was implemented by the Catholic University of Lublin in the 2013/2014 academic year. At that time, a group of 36 people from all over Poland, imprisoned in the remand center in Lublin, began their studies in the field of social work. The candidates were offered an innovative specialty – street work.

Currently, 26 inmates are studying at the Catholic University of Lublin. Six third-year students prepare diploma theses. With this year’s graduates and prospective students in mind (minimum Bachelor’s degree) in mind, the authorities of the Catholic University of Lublin have confirmed that recruitment has been initiated for the second degree of studies in the field of family studies.
