“Vaccines, tests and better weather give us confidence that this unprecedented epidemic is nearing its end,” Kyriakos Mikotakis said in a televised address.

However, he noted that infection rates are still high and people should not travel during the weekend beginning April 30.

The Greek government had announced earlier that it hopes to restore tourism from mid-May. However, a spike in infections in recent days has brought these confirmations into question.

As Reuters reports, Greece emerged from the first wave of the pandemic in better shape than many of the wealthiest European countries. However, it has been hit hard in recent months by a recurring epidemic, and the rapid increase in infections has crippled medical services across the country. Mikotakis explained that the roadmap for the pandemic is currently based on no further increase in the number of infections, but added that restaurants should open from May 3 and schools from May 10.

This month, the Greek government began distributing free home test kits widely to help beat the pandemic.
